Princess Cruises owns and operates the British-registered ship The Diamond Princess. It first operated in March 2004. It is primarily used for cruises in Asia, Australia and the Northern and Southern Hemisphere summers. The ship can accommodate more than 2,500 people and is popular with families and couples.

Two passengers with pre-existing conditions were admitted to hospital on Tuesday, 11 February. Despite the quarantine passengers continued to take part in ship activities like quizzes, dances, and other fun. Fortunately the virus has not spread throughout the ship.


The Japanese government dispatched public health officials to the Diamond Princess ship wearing protective suits in response to the incident. The Japanese government believes the virus was carried on board after January 20. Cruise line investigating possible connections to the Japanese government. The man from Hong Kong boarded the ship in Japan, stayed on board for five more days, before returning home. The virus was identified in the Hong Kong man and he will be kept quarantined for 14 more days.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, there are 169 new Coronavirus cases at Diamond Princess. The Japanese government is working with the cruise lines to ensure that guests are not infected. Princess Cruises has also said that Canada and Australia plan to repatriate those who are affected.
