Italy: Cruise Ship Crash

cruise news royal caribbean

It seems like a scene from a disaster movie when a cruise ship collided with a dock and a smaller riverboat in Italy. Fearful people fled the scene. Sunday morning's incident occurred in the Giudecca Canal.

A video of the incident has made headlines around the world, and many residents of the city have urged the mayor to ban large cruise ships from Venice. The large vessels pose a threat to tourists and ecological damage to Venice's lagoon.

MSC Opera was a massive cruise ship that traveled to Kotor in Montenegro. It also visited Greece's Mykonos Islands and Santorini. It was about to dock in Venice when it had a mechanical problem. The tugboats that guided it to Venice tried to stop the ship, but the captain stated that the engine of his ship had failed and he could not get help.

It is unclear how the engine failure triggered the crash. MSC Cruises claimed that the ship had a technical problem. However, it said that they are "working closely" with local maritime and authorities to find out the exact cause of the crash.

A report from Italian media says that the MSC Opera experienced a loss of control, which caused it to take an unexpected turn into the Giudecca Canal. The tugboats tried to pull it out, but the large ship was able to smash into a riverboat in the canal.

The collision reportedly caused injuries to several riverboat passengers, including an American tourist and a New Zealander. Two tugboats accompanied the MSC Cruises boat when it collided in the River Countess. This tourist boat plys along the canal between Venice San Marco and Piazza San Marco.

According to Italian media sources, medical officials believe that the MSC Orchestra crashed into River Countess just before 8 a.m. Central European Time (CET) when it was being operated by cruise ships. The accident reportedly injured five people, including four female tourists -- an American, a New Zealander and two Australians between the ages of 67 and 72.

It had been in Kotor, Montenegro. The ship was on its way back to Italy. However, it lost power when entering the Giudecca Canal. It hit a tow-cord that connected it with the Venice dock at the entrance to Venice. This caused it to snap.

Some passengers on board the riverboat were allowed to escape after the vessel was cut in two. However, others needed to be rescued and taken to safety by a lifeboat. Some tourists were injured on the riverboat and had to be taken to hospitals.

A reporter from Venice posted a video of the cruise boat hitting the River Countess on social media. She shared that she was shocked to find the big ship, which was cruising down canal with its horn blasting and suddenly crashed into the smaller vessel.

How do you plan your first Cruise?

Planning a cruise is just like any other trip. You need to take into account many factors such as budgeting, where to go and activities. When planning your first cruise, you should know some things to keep in mind if cruising is new to you. Cruises can last up to three weeks, which is why you don't want any missed! Here are some tips to help make this vacation even easier:

  1. Book at least six months prior to departure. This way, you can get great deals and avoid crowds. Also, you'll have plenty time to research your ship, itinerary, ports and activities. There might be a great deal on airfare!
  2. Pick a destination. It doesn't really matter what port you choose, just choose one that appeals. There are many reasons people love to cruise to different destinations. Some prefer to explore cities while others prefer to relax on board. Whatever your preferences, you should remember which destination you would like to visit. A popular choice is a Caribbean island, followed closely by Europe and Alaska.
  3. Book a suite. Suites offer more space, a private balcony, and other amenities. These rooms are generally available for $100-$300 per evening, depending on how big your room is and if there are any suites available during your sailing date.
  4. Check the weather forecast. Cruising can often be associated with warm tropical environments. Check the weather forecasts for days that you will be visiting ports. You should be aware of the potential dangers from the ocean, especially in Antarctica and Alaska.
  5. Pack light - When packing for your cruise, limit yourself to only 10 items. That means no suitcases full of clothes or shoes! Pack everything in small bags that you can carry on. Layer clothing, as you won't be able wash it at all on board.
  6. Do your homework - Before you buy tickets, read reviews online. Be sure to review their policies regarding pricing, the services they provide, as well and whether cancellation policies make sense.
  7. Do not miss these must see spots. Visit each port at minimum once. Each one has its own culture and charm, so be sure to visit every local site.
