How To

How to be safe on a cruise ship

There are many things to be aware of before you board a cruise ship. You must understand how to behave when onboard so you don't get into trouble. These safety tips will ensure that you have a safe trip.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. On board a cruise ship, people tend to congregate together, especially during meals. You can easily become distracted by the chatter and food of others. Do not let people distract you from your task. If you notice someone engaging in dangerous behavior, such as smoking, or drinking alcohol, politely tell them to stop.
  2. Keep your room keys close to your body when you board a ship. When you get onboard, hand your key over to the person checking you in. If you get lost or need to be found, this will help you to locate your shipmates. Keep your passport with you.
  3. Your valuables should be kept out of reach. Many cabins have drawers underneath the bed. That's a great place to store valuables such as passports, credit cards, and money. Make sure that nothing valuable is visible from plain sight. Put your bags away in the closet so no one can see them.
  4. Keep hydrated. It can be hard to remember that cruise ships provide ample water. Get bottled water for free on the ship. Try to avoid getting dehydrated. Dehydration can cause fatigue and make it difficult to concentrate, leading to arguments or even accidents.
  5. Always pay attention to announcements. Announcements appear everywhere, including on TV screens or public address systems. These announcements include safety procedures, emergency exits and weather reports. Pay attention to these announcements. They might save your life!
  6. Always lock the cabin before you leave. No matter how friendly a crew member may seem, never leave your cabin without locking it. Many thieves break into cabins by stealing the doors. Ask a crew member first if you need to use the bathroom.
  7. Avoid going overboard alone. The crew will need to wait for you to be rescued if you do fall overboard. Sharks and other marine creatures might be attracted to you while you wait. It's best to wait until help arrives.
  8. Smoking is not permitted in elevators. These elevators are pressurized and smoke can build up quickly. Get off immediately if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Even though the air outside is fresh, it doesn't mean breathing is safe.
  9. Know the evacuation procedure. Every year, many people die in elevators. In an emergency, you should follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
  10. Be familiar with the fire drill. Fire drills happen regularly, usually once per day. Everyone on the deck must evacuate during a drill. Follow the instructions given by crew members. After the drill is completed, return to your cabin and lock it.
  11. Ask questions before accepting food or drinks. Cruisers frequently experience food poisoning. People don't know that certain foods are not safe to be eaten while aboard a ship. For example, raw oysters are forbidden aboard most cruise ships. If you aren't sure if the food being offered to you is safe, politely decline and choose another meal.
  12. Take care when you use the pool. There have been numerous instances of people accidentally falling into the pools. Do not be alarmed if you fall in the pool. You may also slip and fall on the deck. Wearing proper footwear is a must and paying attention to the surroundings are important.
